Since graduating in 1978 from
the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
Science, Dr. Johnson has worked in a variety of positions in nursing,
administration, research, and informatics. From the mid-1980’s
forward, her main focus has been research and applied informatics in the areas
of health promotion and disease prevention. In addition to developing and
directing the development of numerous large databases as well as user-interfaces
in the areas of obstetrics/neonatology, cancer prevention, and cancer genetics,
Dr. Johnson has extensive experience with coordinating and implementing large
population studies. While at The University of
Texas-Houston Health Science Center, Dr. Johnson studied under an F38-Fellowship
from the National Library of Medicine. Practical applications of her recent
research include studying the effects of information display on the construction
of clinician mental models, and the design of a genetics database and pedigree
drawing program for practitioners, funded by a grant from the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board. In her most recent position at The University of
Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Department of Biostatistics and Applied
Mathematics, her research is focusing on the building of cancer risk models,
risk representation, and human-centered interfaces.
