For the current time, informatics students are
provided with loaner Dell laptops as well as web audio and video
conferencing hardware for the duration of their program.
Other technologies, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) are
required purchases for all new incoming Duke nursing students, and
recommended hardware for these purchases is provided with orientation
materials for new students. iPods are optional at the present
time, and are used for delivering mp3 sound files for lectures, but
these are also available for listening on the laptop. At
this time, all software for the program is provided on the
laptops.
The loaner laptops were made possible through a DHHS grant through the
Division of Nursing (Advanced Education Nursing). As they wear
out and break, we will transition to a required new laptop purchase for
future nursing informatics students as they begin the program, and will
provide hardware and software specifications at this site when that
time comes.
